Hernan Cattaneo has slowly risen to the upper echelons of the international DJ circuit and was rewarded with the number 7 slot on DJ Magazine’s last Top 100 DJs poll. His third compilation for Renaissance is a move away from the Masters Series and into new territory with a project called ‘Sequential’

CD1 commences in Cattaneo’s usual style. Deep cuts from Brazilian Gui Boratto, Pole Petersky and the UK’s Trafik are seamlessly woven together. The refreshing melodics of Tommyboy & Mannel’s ‘Feel It’ provide an early highlight while Dousk’s ‘Florence’ picks up the pace and is the first hint of the pure progressive sound with which Cattaneo made his mark. The remainder of the first disc has a large element of funk to it; music that that would feel at home in the record bags of house and progressive DJs alike. The sparkling keys of Paolo Mojo’s 1983 and the harder-edged ‘With My Friends’ by Randall Jones stand out. Hernan’s own remix of Phonique feat Erland Oye ‘For The Time Being’ brings the CD to an epic, tripped out conclusion.

CD2 features a diverse roster of talent, from Bushwacka! through to Union Jack, Slam and Derek Howell. The mix drifts effortlessly through this fusion of styles, perfectly encapsulating the sound of Cattaneo’s recent live sets. Highlights of the early part of the mix are Luke Chable’s remix of Union Jack’s timeless ‘Two Full Moons and a Trout’, which spreads the original vocal sample over the Australian’s usual tight kicks and percussion work, and Derek Howell’s excellent ‘Cram It Up Your Cram Hole’. The mix moves into more progressive territory with Marco Bailey’s ‘Fatal Attraction’ and Dan Welton’s ‘Lisopain’, remixed by talented LA-based producer The Pushers (aka Colin C., Slighter and Deeptone). The CD concludes with Hernan Cattaneo & John Tonk’s ‘Sirocco’, a driving piece of progressive house.

Hernan Cattaneo’s sound has changed a little in recent times. The housier elements he has embraced feature heavily in ‘Sequential’ but the quality that shone through in the Masters Series compilations remains. Even if you prefer him on a more progressive slant, nothing can take away from a skill that Cattaneo has in abundance; the ability to pick the right records and blend them together to create something greater than the sum of it’s considerable parts.
